Founded in 2015 by Phil Magney, VSI Labs is the leading research and advisory firm that tracks the building blocks of automated vehicles. Supporting the R&D and planning departments of the automotive eco-system, VSI Labs’ research services are an invaluable tool for understanding critical technology and architectural strategy. Their skills include a combination of automotive systems, software, and real-time computing. Hardware and software engineers are experienced in Python, C++, OpenCV, ROS, Cafe, Tensorflow, neural networks, simulation tools, and Functional Safety ISO 26262.

Phil Magney | Founder & Principal Advisor
Phil Magney is an automotive executive with over 25 years experience in automotive electronics, active safety systems, automated vehicle systems and telematics. He is the Founder and Principal Advisor of VSI Labs, the leading global researcher and advisory firm on autonomous vehicle technologies.
Before founding VSI, Phil was co-founder and president of Telematics Research Group (TRG), which was acquired by iSuppli in 2008. When iSuppli’s Automotive Group was acquired by IHS a few years later, Phil became Head of IHS Automotive Technology Group. Phil regularly speaks at leading conferences globally and is often quoted in major media outlets and publications.
Outside the office, Phil is an avid Porsche motorsport enthusiast and was SCCA’s 2016 ITE Central Division Champion.
Danny Kim | Director, Advisory Services
Danny Kim has more than 15 years of experience in the telecommunications, mobile, software and automotive industries. As one of the partners at VSI, Danny Kim’s responsibilities include custom project management, new product development, technology analysis writing and forecasting, and conference speaking engagement in the areas of autonomous vehicle technologies.
On top of autonomous vehicle development processes and enabling technologies, his areas of expertise also includes IVI system architecture, IVI operating systems and software platforms, vehicle connectivity interfaces, mobile devices & content integrations in the car, HMI & IVI system usability, Advanced Driver Assist Systems and V2X communications.
Prior to VSI, he oversaw IHS Automotive Technology Group’s global strategy consulting practice and managed all of the group’s custom projects funded by major automotive OEMs and suppliers. In those projects, he structured research framework, performed primary and secondary research, and managed internal and external resources and procurement processes.
Prior to engaging in the consulting practice at IHS, he was a senior analyst and manager for its automotive group. He’s been a frequent industry trend column writer and conference speaker on mobile devices and services industry as well as automotive infotainment markets. Frequently quoted by major media such as NYT, BusinessWeek, Nikkei Electronics, EETimes, etc.
Outside the office, Danny enjoys golfing, fishing and ice fishing. He is also an avid learner of Korean and Japanese cooking.
Matthew Linder | Autonomous Solutions Engineer, Team Leader
Matthew Linder is an Autonomous Solutions Researcher at VSI Labs, the leading global research and analyst firm for autonomous vehicle technologies. His current research specializes in artificial intelligence (AI) research for autonomous vehicles, as well as algorithms for autonomous driving. He is lead researcher on the company’s Level 2 automation lab, focused on bench and vehicle testing.
Matthew has his Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science from the University of Minnesota.
Outside the office, Matthew enjoys camping, biking, playing video games and working on hobby programming projects.
